Ecology and Evolutionary Biology graduate student wins 2022 UCLA Grad Slam Final

On March 9, 2022, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Ph.D. Candidate, Kelsi Rutledge, won 1st Place at the 2022 UCLA Grad Slam Finals for a beautifully clear and engaging presentation of her Ph.D. research: “The Fluid Dynamics of Smell: A Stingray’s Perspective”.  The results of her research are already being used by the Navy to design underwater vehicles that can better detect dangerous chemicals in water.

UCLA Grad Slam is a campus-wide (and UC-wide) competition that awards graduate students for clearly communicating their research to a general audience, with a compelling 3-minute research presentation.  Each year, graduate students across UCLA’s campus compete in Grad Slam, and the winner advances to compete in the final UC-wide competition. The competition highlights the excellence, importance and relevance of UC graduate student research.
