SUMMARY:Marschak Colloquium: “Conserving Wildlife and Human Cultures”
DESCRIPTION:“Conserving Wildlife and Human Cultures”\, Speaker: Alejandra Echeverri Ochoa\, PhD; Assistant Professor\, Department of Environmental Science\, Policy and Management\, UC Berkeley \nHalting the loss of biodiversity and cultural diversity necessitates an understanding of the connections between people and the planet. In her talk\, Alejandra Echeverri will elucidate how individuals perceive endangered species\, such as sea otters\, and explore effective messaging strategies to foster greater care for wildlife. Additionally\, she will delve into the profound cultural significance attributed to birds\, while highlighting the impacts of deforestation and climate change on revered species. \nThrough a comprehensive policy analysis\, Echeverri will demonstrate the current state of environmental policies and how they govern biodiversity. Lastly\, she will demonstrate the promising role of the tourism sector in wildlife conservation and its contribution to preserving human cultures. Her talk will also show how community-engaged research with governments and local communities might lead to policy changes in the environmental sector. \nThis talk will be held in person and via Zoom. Light refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:Age: Just a Number?
DESCRIPTION:The UCLA Institute for Quantitative and Computational Biosciences (QCBio) \ninvites you to a special virtual event\nAge: Just a Number? \nJoin us for an illuminating conversation with UCLA faculty members \nMatteo Pellegrini\nDirector\, QCBio Collaboratory\nProfessor\, Molecular\, Cell and Developmental Biology \nJing Huang\nProfessor\, Molecular and Medical Pharmacology\nDavid Geffen School of Medicine \nThomas A. Rando\nDirector\, Broad Stem Cell Research Center\nProfessor\, Neurology\, David Geffen School of Medicine\nProfessor\, Molecular\, Cell and Developmental Biology \nwith introductory remarks and moderated Q&A by \nAlexander Hoffmann\nDirector\, Institute for Quantitative and Computational Biosciences\nThomas M. Asher Professor of Microbiology\nMicrobiology\, Immunology and Molecular Genetics \nThursday\, April 25\, 2024 \n5:30 – 6:30 p.m. PT \nWebinar Registration \nA longstanding and fundamental question is whether the aging process marches forward with time\, or whether it can be stopped or even reversed. Three UCLA faculty who are leaders in different branches of biology are addressing this question through innovative approaches\, resulting in exciting discoveries such as the existence of an “epigenetic aging clock” and “longevity metabolites” — as well as the development of interventions that may have the potential to dramatically extend human healthspans and lifespans. \nFollowing presentations and discussions\, attendees will be invited to ask questions of the speakers during a moderated Q&A.

SUMMARY:UCLA Health Brain Health Summit
DESCRIPTION:The UCLA Health Brain Health Summit will unite researchers\, clinicians\, policymakers\, and communities to advance brain health across California\, the US\, and globally. In an era marked by climate disasters\, social upheaval\, and a rapidly aging population\, brain health must be recognized as a fundamental public health priority essential to individual resilience and societal well-being. Evidence-based interventions can protect function\, strengthen resilience\, and reduce long-term effects.
