Anthony J. Covarrubias in lab

Anthony Covarrubias, Ph.D.

January 21, 2025

Anthony Covarrubias, an assistant professor of microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics, received a $2 million Maximizing Investigator’s Research Award (MIRA) to advance research on “senescent” cells. These are damaged cells that resist removal, and build up in our bodies as we age. They have been linked to age-related diseases– like cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, stroke, dementia, and osteoarthritis.

Covarrubias will study senescent cells, focusing on “macrophages”- a type of immune cell known to remove dead cells and stimulate other immune cells. His research will lay the foundation for developing treatments for chronic diseases that have been linked to senescent cells.
