Evie Junior UCLA Broad Stem Cell Research Center
Physician-scientists Dr. Donald Kohn and Dr. Gary Schiller, both members of the UCLA Broad Stem Cell Research Center, are providing hope to people like Evie Junior, a patient enrolled in their clinical trial to treat sickle cell disease.
In addition to being a member of the Stem Cell Research Center, Dr. Kohn is also a UCLA Distinguished Professor of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics. Over the past 10 years, Kohn has developed a gene therapy treatment to correct DNA mutations in blood-forming stem cells. Using this therapy, he’s successfully treated several immune system deficiencies. While sickle cell disease has been difficult to treat with gene therapy up to now, this recent story provides hope.
