Anthony Covarrubias, Ph.D.
January 21, 2025
Anthony Covarrubias, an assistant professor of microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics, received a $2 million Maximizing Investigator’s Research Award (MIRA) – from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences – to advance research on damaged cells that resist removal and persist in the body.
These cells, aka “senescent” cells, increase in number as we age and have been linked to age-related diseases– like cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, stroke, dementia, and osteoarthritis.
With this latest award, Covarrubias will study senescent cells, focusing on immune cells known as “macrophages” whose job it is to remove dead cells and stimulate other immune cells. His research will lay the foundation for targeted therapies against chronic diseases linked to senescent cells.
