CAR-T cell therapy is a potent new cancer treatment – being researched by microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics professor Lili Yang and materials science and engineering professor Yu Huang. The therapy involves genetically engineering a patient’s own immune cells to specifically target and kill their cancer cells.
Today, the California NanoSystems Institute reports on a UCLA research collaboration that developed a new platform which effectively produces the powerful cancer-killing T cells that lie at the heart of CAR-T therapy.
This new approach could advance CAR-T treatment for blood cancers and the progress of other emerging immunotherapies.
